Promising Young woman Storyline
In Ohio, 30-year-old Cassie Thomas, a medical school dropout, works at a coffee shop while residing with her parents. Her closest friend, Nina Fisher, was sexually assaulted seven years prior by a student who was supposed to be Al Monroe. Nina finally committed herself because neither the school nor the judicial system conducted an inquiry or took any action.
Cassie now spends her nights pretending to be intoxicated at bars and clubs so that unsuspecting guys would take her to their houses. If they attempt to take advantage of her, she will then disclose her sobriety. Ryan Cooper, a former classmate who is now a paediatric surgeon, asks Cassie out on a date. Al is getting married shortly, he says.
She starts to formulate a plan to inflict revenge on Al and other people who, in her opinion, are accountable for Nina’s rape and suicide. She runs into Madison McPhee, a different ex-classmate, who accuses Nina of routinely becoming intoxicated to the point of blacking out and argues that a rape claim was inevitable as a result.
